    History of the town

Saint-Tropez experienced an ascent at the end of the 15th century thanks to the will of Baron de Grimaud, Jean Cossa, who was once lord of the lands of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. He created a port city to protect the villages of the Gulf from maritime enemies. The inhabitants lived mainly from the treasures of the sea, fishing as well as maritime trade including wine.
The painters and writers fell under the charm of this small coastal village at the end of the 19th century and including the greatest artists such as Maupassant, Matisse and Colette. Saint-Tropez is truly known internationally with the filming of the famous film “Et Dieu… created the woman» whose main role was played by Brigitte Bardot, the undisputed ambassador of Saint-Tropez.
