History of the town

The Lords and Princes of Antibes founded the first parish within the Church of Saint-Pierre. They also built the castle on a rocky summit, the Castellas, to maintain their authority over the territory. According to historian David Faure-Vincent, a building built high up is often referred to as “roque”. It is therefore very likely that the qualifier of “castling” on Loup then, of “strong rock” is at the origin of the current name of the municipality, especially since it implies an active defense of the territory.
