History of the town

Menton came into existence in the 1250s, and its historical center developed around the Roman road that traversed it.

By 1880, Menton became a fashionable seaside resort, benefiting from the tourist development of the French Riviera. It was favored by English tourists and the Russian aristocracy. Palaces and luxury villas were built, and it hosted notable figures such as Empress Eugénie, King Albert I of Belgium, Alexander of Russia, Queen Victoria of England, as well as renowned artists like Auguste Rodin, Franz Liszt, and Charles Gounod.
