This historic village has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Its interest is mentioned in the 11th century in a charter from the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille. Ramatuelle is located near St-Tropez, Sainte-Maxime and Gassin. It was built on a hill to defend against enemies. The city was known in the Middle Ages as Ramatuella (derived from the Arabic "mercy of God").
The village of Ramatuelle is perched on the hill of Paillas about 130 meters south of Saint-Tropez. It overlooks the famous Pampelonne beach and overlooks the wine-growing plains.
