    Tourrette-Levens

    SUMMARY

Located just 15 kilometers from Nice, Tourrette-Levens is a true perched village that still preserves a tower from its original medieval castle.

    History of the town

For millennia, the rocky promontory proudly supporting Tourrette-Levens Castle has played a crucial role as a checkpoint on the famous salt route, inevitably connecting the port of Nice to the Piedmont region. Erected in the 12th century by Raymond Chabaud, this castle, adorned with six towers—three round and three square—was once one of the most magnificent structures in the region.

The old village of Tourrette-Levens, contemporaneous with the castle, also dates back to the 12th century. However, it is partially in ruins today, having been abandoned in the 19th century. At the majestic feet of the castle lies the present-day village of Tourrette-Levens, characterized by more recent constructions scattered across different districts like Revel, La Condamine, Camp Soubran, Le Plan d’Arriou, and Les Moulins. Together, they create a landscape where millennial history seamlessly intertwines with the contemporary evolution of this charming commune.
