Châteauneuf de Grasse is an ancient hilltop village dating from the Middle Ages which has remained faithful to the agricultural and horticultural tradition which gave its reputation today. The village is also known for its ceramics, pottery and sculptures and is registered in the inventory of historic sites of the region.
The village was founded in the 12th century by the Lords of Opio, who built the castle, found within the village of Opio. The inhabitants nearby came to settle in this Château neuf or “New Chateau” to protect themselves from the aggressive incursions of the people of Grasse and hence the site of Châteauneuf d’Opio was born. A troubled period marked the takeover of eastern Provence by the Counts of Barcelona, who became Counts of Provence. The army of the Count of Provence commanded by Romée de Villeneuve took Opio in 1178. Châteauneuf d’Opio was taken in 1229. Châteauneuf d’Opio, was detached from Opio in 1257and Châteauneuf d’Opio became Châteauneuf de Grasse!
Located 420 m above sea level, the village is built on a lush hillside peppered with hundred-year-old olive trees and overlooks the Opio plain. The village offers a magnificent panorama from the Italian Alps in the East to the Estérel mountains in the West.
Châteauneuf has retained the both the Provençal and the agricultural tradition. Its olive groves and its plateau of a thousand truffle oaks, offer both artisanal and commercial activities, all around the area.

The Grande Bastide golf courseThe Grande Bastide golf course is located at the foot of the villages of Opio and Châteauneuf de Grasse and just 20 minutes by car from Nice and Cannes.
