History of the town

The name of the village is derived from “Oppidum” or “stronghold” in Latin. Opio has a long history: Belonging to the Bishop of Grasse until the Revolution, the village also shows signs the remains of the Roman era, including a beautiful woman’s head in marble, currently on display at the Grasse museum.
The main activities of the village were the production of olive oil and the cultivation of roses and jasmine, intended for perfumers in Grasse.

Environment

Thanks to an exceptional microclimate, Opio is known for its roses and jasmine, but also for the olive grove of the “Grande Bastide”, one of the largest in the region, producing a delicious olive oil to be discovered will discovered at the mill, the “Moulin d´Opio”, dating from the 15th century. It is one of the last oil mills still in operation.
