The ancient mediaeval village is perched on a hill which was fortified in the Middle Ages.
In the 11th century, the Count of Antibes donated the village of Mougins to the monks of the Lérins Abbey, who kept it until the French Revolution.
In the nineteenth century, the main economic activity of the town was the production of flowers, especially rose and jasmine for the perfume industry in Grasse.
It was during the second half of the 20th century that this locality became an artistic centre of the Côte d’Azur attracting tourists to the area. The exceptional light and tranquillity won over many artists and celebrities who chose to stay, notably Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso (who spent the last 15 years of his life there), Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Paul Eluard, Man Ray but also Christian Dior, Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel …
Historically a farming area specializing in the growing of jasmine, it is now peppered by an abundance of villas of all architectural styles, from contemporary to traditional Provencal, earning its reputation as “garden city”.
Surrounded by forests, (the Valmasque forest, a Natonal Park covers 427 hectares) Mougins has managed to keep the quality of its environment intact and offers, from its altitude 260 meters above the sea, a magnificent panorama over the bay of Cannes, the islands of Lérins, Grasse and the Pre-Alps, dominating the Mediterranean coastline.
On arrival in the village, you will succumb to the charm of its winding streets tastefully decorated with flowers and lined with superb ancient village houses.
Beautiful doors, carefully restored stone walls, skilfully highlighted windows … wherever your gaze will settle, the wonder of detail will follow!
The subtly preserved imprint of the past, the harmony of colours and the quality of light have won over many artists and celebrities who have chosen to stay in Mougins, including Picasso, Cocteau, Fernand Léger .. Mougins has always had close ties with the artistic and cultural world.
On the outskirts of the village, luxurious properties are hidden behind magnificent Mediterranean parks and gardens.
It is no coincidence that Mougins remains one of the musts of the Côte d’Azur today.
Close to the coast and its summer entertainment while enjoying the calm of the hinterland, surrounded by not less than seven golf courses between 5 and 30 minutes distant, more than 40 restaurants, twenty art galleries and painting workshops and of course an atmosphere, a special atmosphere that envelops you and enchants.
