Callian is a charming hilltop village found in the south of France. It is a historic village with spiraling cobbled streets and a castle. The town has breathtaking views of Tanneron and the Estérel Mountains. Living in this little village means that you can truly discover the life of Provencal France. We first see the city of Frejus on the maps in the 1st century BC. The port town was the logistical base of the Romans in this region. The hinterland seems to be a source of wealth for its products and its water. In the year 1249 Callian was ruled by a famous nobleman named Kallian. The plague of 1348 followed by the famine of 1364 wiped out most of the villages’ population. The remaining inhabitants dispersed and founded the nearby villages known as Fayance and Tourette.
Callian is found in the middle of the Var. The Var is a lush and beautiful inland region on the French Riviera – famous for its vineyards. The center of the village is the old oil mill with its waterfall once offering the villagers a source of water. Old Roman ruins that used to supply the city of Fréjus with water from Mons remain in the village.
The streets of the village circle and spiral around the feudal castle. The old streets are lined with historic houses that are hundreds of years old. Rolling hills of forests filled with oaks and conifers, cypresses and olive trees surround the village. The village has outstanding panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The wonderful views reveal all the diversity and beauty of the villages privileged position.
Church of the ConfessorsThe castle that is central to the village is actually a church-castle. Originally, it was a parish church, and as the village developed they protected it with a castle. Today it is used to host exhibitions, events and classical concerts. The church has a stunning bell tower in the chapel finished with a dome and colored tiles. It is classified as a historical heritage since 1944.
