History

The battlements are full of rich history which has a thousand-year-old heritage. In the centre of the village, the sound of the big fountain makes the rhythm of your trip.
Through the 20th century, actors, artists and writers made Saint-Paul its cultural richness. For a stay or for a lifetime, each artist marks their way in their own way forever.
The 1950s and 1960s constitute the golden age of the village: Saint-Paul de Vence is transformed into a fabulous cinema set on which the stars of the 7th French and foreign art meet. It is attracted to the Côte d'Azur by the festival of Cannes.
The presence of the famous French poet Jacques Prévert in Saint-Paul for fifteen years helped to attract many French directors such as Henri-Georges Clouzot and André Cayatte. Prévert lived in The house "La miette" by Jacques Prévert.

The Maeght FoundationIt is a story of family and friendship. The foundation of Aimé and Marguerite Maeght is a magical unique place of the Cote D’azur. The building which was inaugurated in 1964 is located on the hill of Gardettes, not far from Saint-Paul de Vence. Aimé and Marguerite Maeght imagined and financed it in collaboration with the Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert. Their artist friends personally participated in its design and its realization, where each incorporating a space for the future foundation. Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder and even Fernand Léger have found an ideal place for creation where rooms and gardens interact in the most perfect harmony.
The museum is built within a unique environment full of nature. The Maeght Foundation brings together one of the most important European collections of works from the 20th century. Not to be missed!
