Situated on a hilltop overlooking the Bay of Cannes, Mougins enjoys a reputation as being one of the most beautiful villages in France. Surrounded by olive groves and the pines and cypresses of the Valmasque forest, Mougins has a fabulous natural setting while the town itself, with its narrow winding streets, ancient buildings and stunning vistas, enjoys an air of movie-set perfection. Located just seven kilometres to the north of Cannes, the town is a popular alternative to its chic neighbour and the fact that Mougins has so many luxurious villas and rental properties makes it a popular destination for holidaymakers and business travellers alike.
Although Mougins has been occupied since Roman times, the majority of its architecture dates from the 15th century when it was owned by the Monks of Saint Honorat from the nearby Îles de Lerins. Nowadays the town is home to an array of luxurious boutiques and intimate cafés as well as a number of popular galleries and studios. Mougins has attracted all manner of creative personalities over the years and amongst it famous former residents it lists Yves Saint Laurent, Isadora Duncan, Man Ray, Catherine Deneuve and Pablo Picasso.
Mougins fosters its cultural heritage and despite its size it is home to a number of excellent museums. The Museum of Photography includes works by Lartique, Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau, while the Musée de l’Automobile, located just out of town on the A8, houses a wonderful collection of classic sports cars including Bugattis and Ferraris. Last, but not least, one must mention the fact that Mougins is home to more Michelin rated restaurants than any other region in France.
