Situated some 10km to the north of Cannes, Valbonne is a charming Renaissance era town that has experienced a huge increase in popularity since the founding of the neighbouring Sophia Antipolis Science Park in 1968. The town plays host to a thriving international community and has a large Anglophone population, with many of the local researchers and engineers choosing to live in the many luxurious villas around Valbonne. Although the area around Valbonne has been inhabited for many thousands of years, the town itself is relatively young and was founded as recently as 1519, when Augustin de Grimaldi, the bishop of Grasse, mobilised the local population to build a new town to repopulate an area that had been ravaged by the plague since 1351. The result is a town that displays a rigidly orthogonal street pattern that is highly unusual for the region. However, despite its rigid planning, Valbonne remains an extremely attractive and relaxing setting.
The town's name is derived from the Latin 'Vallis Bona', which translates literally as 'the good valley'. The name remains an apt description of the Brague Valley, in which the town lays and which also includes the beautiful 'Parc Départemental de la Brague', which serves as a popular location for hiking and horse-riding, as well as part of the Nature Park of La Valmasque, which includes various nature trails and towers from which to observe the varied flora and fauna.
Other local outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in and around Valbonne Sophia Antipolis include swimming, cycling, tennis, fishing and golf. The local municipal swimming pool includes a variety of outdoor pools and is open for the duration of the summer season, while the banks of the Brague are ever popular with cyclists and anglers alike. Valbonne Sophia Antipolis is also blessed with two private tennis clubs as well as a local authority club, which together offer a total of 34 courts. Golf enthusiasts, meanwhile, will be able to enjoy the nearby Golf d'Opio Valbonne and the Victoria Golf Club, which provide 18 and 9 hole courses respectively.
