Situated atop a rocky outcrop between two deep valleys and surrounded by massive stone ramparts, the little town of St Paul de Vence is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in Provence. The town is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in France and it has become an extremely popular tourist destination.
Amongst the first groups of people to ‘discover’ the delights of St Paul de Vence were the artists who flocked to the village during the 1920’s. These included such luminaries as Matisse, Chagall, Renoir, Signac and Dufy as well as the writers Gide, Giono, Cocteau and Prévert. By the 1960’s the town had become popular with a number of directors and movie stars including Henri-Georges Clouzot, Yves Montand, Romy Schneider, Roger Moore and Tony Curtis.
One of the establishments that was particular popular with artists visiting St Paul de Vence, was ‘La Résidence’. This charming old hotel and restaurant survives today as ‘La Colombe d’Or’ and those looking for holiday in accommodation in St Paul de Vence are unlikely to find a more luxurious venue than this one. Both Matisse and Picasso stayed in this hotel and both apparently settled their bills by donating pieces of artwork to the dining room gallery.
St Paul de Vence also boasts some outstanding galleries and museums including the Local History Museum and Saint Paul’s Museum. The true cultural highlight of the town however, is the superb Fondation Maeght. Designed by the modernist Catalan architect, Josep Luis Sert, the Fondation houses over 9,000 works of art, including paintings by Joan Miró and Marc Chagall, and a sculpture garden with works by Léger, Braque and Giacometti.
