Situated on a peninsula close to Nice and Beaulieu-sur-Mer, the town of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat is one of the French Riviera’s most desirable and exclusive locations. The town has been attracting wealthy visitors and aristocracy since 1860, when the County of Nice was finally ceded to France having formerly been part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. The first luxury villas appeared in Cap Ferrat, when King Léopold II of Belgium built several regal properties around an artificial late. The main residence of this complex, the Villa les Cédres, now houses a botanical garden which contains over 14,000 species of tropical plants making it one of the largest collections of its kind in Europe.

The most celebrated villa in Cap Ferrat is undoubtedly the Villa Île de France, which was built for the Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild between 1905 and 1912. Designed in the Tuscan style by the Belgian architect Aaron Messiah, the rose coloured villa is surrounded by nine themed gardens the construction of which was overseen by the landscape architect Achille Duchene. The villa is open to the general public and visitors can view the Baroness’ enormous collection, which includes over 5,000 works of art, antique furniture, objets d’art and rare porcelain.
