At first glance the old town of Valbonne and its overtly modern neighbour, the Sophia Antipolis Science Park, could not seem more different. Valbonne, on the one hand, is an attractive and chic little town characterised by narrow streets, charming squares and Renaissance era buildings, while Sophia Antipolis is a gleaming, high-tech technology park that shares the look and feel of its famous contemporary, La Défense in Paris.
However the two settlements share a common history in that they were both originally conceived as 'New Towns'. What separates them, of course, is time. Valbonne, whose name is derived from the Latin term 'vallis bonne' (good valley), was conceived in the year of 1519, when the bishop of Grasse, Augustin de Grimaldi, organised local communities to create an entirely self-built village in order to repopulate an area that had been ravaged by plague for almost two centuries.
Although modern day Valbonne might not resemble a 'new town' its origins are revealed by the strict orthogonal lines of its rectilinear street pattern. Despite the rigidity of its planning, Valbonne has developed into a charming and relaxed town that has become something of a centre for the Valbonne Sophia Antipolis community as a whole. The town possesses an array of charming café and restaurants and has some wonderful little shops all of which have made Valbonne villas extremely popular with the engineers and researchers from the nearby science park.
Sophia-Antipolis, meanwhile, was founded in 1968 and has since developed into a world-renowned international community of industrialists, engineers and researchers, with over 1,000 companies employing a workforce of more than 25,000. Thanks to the skill and innovation of its architects and planners, Sophia Antipolis, which since the 1980's has also included parts of the campus of the University of Nice, remains not only an extremely attractive location in which to work, but also a great place in which to live as well.
Whether you wish to live in Valbonne itself, or one of the many settlements in and around the Sophia Antipolis Science Park, Carlton International has a wonderful range of Sophia Antipolis property and Valbonne villas.
