Ramatuelle Real Estate : Discover the town
Ramatuelle is a perched village, which sits high above the world-famous Pampelonne Beach. Initially built centuries ago by frustrated Frenchmen trying to escape the pirates who patrolled the Mediterranean Sea, it is now a much-loved haven from the crowds of sun-worshippers who come to the beaches of the Saint-Tropez peninsula every summer.
Ramatuelle is a village steeped in history and mystery, the origins of which are believed to date back to the 8th or 9th century. Legend has it that during this time the people of Ramatuelle fought the Turkish for their village with hives of bees after they had finished all their ammunition. However, the Saracens proved to be stronger than the villagers, conquering Ramatuelle and making it their own,
Ramatuelle was built on the peak of a hill, and its narrow streets wind gently around it in a circular pattern. At the top of the village is the Place Gabriel Peri which used to be called Castle Square.
Today most of the action centres on Ramatuelle’s main square, Place de l’Ormeau, which is located just outside the ancient stone gateway to the village. Here you will find a number of bars and restaurants which make an ideal watering hole before setting off to wander around the cobbled streets of the village, home to a growing number of art galleries and exclusive boutiques.
Ramatuelle also enjoys a reputation as somewhere to come for excellent dining. The village, just six kilometres from Saint-Tropez, is home to some of the areas finest restaurants, including La Réserve Ramatuelle and the Auberge la Verdoyante.
It has also gained a name for itself amongst musicians, thanks to its world-famous jazz festival, held every summer. There is also a popular drama festival, which takes place at the end of July.
